Job Title Research Scientist - Post-Doc for Carnivore Research Program Location Alpine Department Borderlands Research Institute Job No. Posting Date 08/09/2021 End Date Until Filled Yes Appointment Date Salary $50,000 Required

Completed (or nearly completed) Ph.D. in Conservation Biology, Range and Wildlife Management or closely related field, with a preferred expertise in carnivore ecology, camera trapping, and spatial and statistical analysis. Must have experience with field studies using 01S and spatial analysis; excellent verbal communication and writing skills; enthusiastic team player who is willing to work in a multidisciplinary program; experience with project and data management; demonstrated skills in leadership.

Preferred

Earned PhD in related field and postdoctoral experience with the following: GIS and analysis of GPS collar data for home range, movements, and habitat modeling; camera trapping studies including field work and analysis of data using cU1Tent techniques; trapping, capture, and handling of carnivores such as black bears or mountain lions; experience with human-wildlife conflict issues and community outreach; and a proven record of writing and publishing in ecological journals.

Primary Responsibilities

Candidate will provide technical support for regional carnivore research initiatives including but not limited to: data collection and analysis, computer programming, field work, GIS and habitat modeling, camera surveys, project coordination, supervising graduate and undergraduate students, grant writing, teaching, disseminating research related information to the public, and public education projects. Primary responsibilities will include data analysis and publishing of mountain lion data collected over the past 10 years in west Texas.

Additional duties will include coordination and support of carnivore projects in the region including mountain lion, black bear, and other mesocarnivores. Candidate will assist with fundraising and coordinating a region-wide black bear project in west Texas. Field work in rugged and remote locations will be required including (but not limited to) filed reconnaissance, trapping, capture and handling of carnivores, and setting and maintaining trail cameras.

Candidate will be expected to analyze GPS collar and camera trap data using current techniques and publish findings in scientific journals. Additional duties will include assistance with teaching courses, coordinating project meetings, organization and compilation of progress reports, synthesizing scientific studies and dat.
