POSITION DETAILS

The Office of Academic Affairs at The City University of New York (CUNY) has recently established a three-year program – the Transformative in Learning in the Humanities (TLH) - with a generous grant support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This program is an innovative faculty initiative that will help the nation's leading urban public university reimage teaching of the humanities that are consistent with CUNY's broad mission of building a more inclusive and equitable society. TLH focuses on the transformation of the humanities classroom through innovative pedagogy. Specifically, TLH will seek to address shortcomings of traditional humanities teaching models and promote the democratization of the humanities classroom through active and participatory learning. This transformative model will prepare humanities students for a world that requires collaboration, written and spoken communication, project management, critical thinking, analytical reading, cross-cultural thinking, and ideation. The Office seeks a Post-Doctoral Fellow, Transformative Learning in the Humanities Grant Program to be held over the 2020-2023 academic year.

Reporting to the Director and working closely with campus faculty directors of the TLH program, the Post-Doctoral Fellow will support new research on innovative pedagogy in the humanities within an institution with strong support for teaching and the humanities and will be part of an enthusiastic and collaborative community of faculty members and staff working together to educate and equip the next generation of students and scholars. The Postdoctoral Fellow will design and conduct qualitative research related to transformative teaching and learning practices and contribute insights and strategic thinking to program development and assessment. This role will also be responsible for TLH program implementation, oversight, and grant reporting.

Other key duties performed include, but will not be limited to the following:

Design and conduct qualitative research related to transformative teaching and learning practices while ensuring that all relevant regulations and ethical conduct standards are in place.

Manage the implementation of the grant, including regular reporting as stipulated by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation; and seek funding opportunities and write grant proposals independently or in collaboration with the TLH Faculty Directors to build upon and expand the work of TLH.

Collaborate with internal researchers, including the TLC Faculty Directors, and external researchers to facilitate efficient and effective decision-making, compile and analyze data, formulate recommendations, and evaluate progress related to TLH project.

Oversee and contribute to development of a learning community spanning humanities departments, Centers for Teaching and Learning, and faculty at multiple CUNY institutions.

Manage the grant assessment process and contribute to and oversee the development of various evaluative instruments to study the impact of the grant.

Cultivate a strong media presence via the social media platform and other traditional media, and communications plan for broadcasting grant-related activities.

Ensure that all work of the grant exemplifies principles of equity and diversity.

Support the TLH program in building upon its development and implementation through seminars and events for TLH Faculty Fellows by contributing insightful and strategic thinking, in addition to contributing to the planning and implementing of informational sessions, pedagogy workshops, open seminars, institutes and other TLH events.

Represent the Office at meetings, events, and academic conferences; presents grant-related activities and research findings; manage complex meeting and event schedules and logistics.

Performs other duties as assigned.

NOTE: Duration of appointment is a maximum of two-years based on grant funding.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM

Doctoral degree in a related field, obtained within three years of appointment to this position

PREFERRED

Doctoral degree in areas within the humanities, social sciences, higher education administration or related field.

Demonstrated experience with conducting and publishing research in the humanities and/or on higher education.

Undergraduate teaching or mentoring experience

Experience in transformative pedagogy

A commitment to public education and the humanities with interest in working with and supporting underserved student populations.

Experience building and engaging communities.

Experience organizing academic events or conferences.

Experience with managing grants and writing annual reports.

Pro-active, flexible and collaborative work style with strong interpersonal communication, presentation, group facilitation and negotiation stills to forge successful relationships and partnerships with diverse members of the university community and external constituents.

Experience supervising, training and evaluating administrative staff.

-Familiarity with academic assessment.

Computer proficiency using academic, and administrative systems, databases, and programs plus virtual meeting/conferencing, collaboration tools, and social media.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Conducts research activities with the supervision and mentorship of a CUNY faculty member.

Performs research and assist faculty, staff, and students with their research.

Collaborates with internal and external researchers.

Seeks funding and writes grant applications, independently and in collaboration with their faculty mentor.

Adhere to relevant regulations and ethical conduct standards pertinent to the conduct of their research.

Performs statistical analysis and assures validity of data.

Performs related duties as assigned.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after July 1, 2019

City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after July 1, 2019 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period. If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.

Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period.

An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
