Research Fellow in Regenerative Medicine and Drug Delivery Bone and Joint

Bone fractures are a huge problem. They cost ~£2 billion/year in the UK. A large part of this cost comes from non-union or delayed-union bone fracture, which affect about 5-10% of cases. These poorly healing bone fractures are devastating for the person affected, sometimes taking many years of major surgery and extensive rehabilitation. There are no drugs and very few therapies yet available that improving healing in non-union or delayed union.

We are investigating whether ultrasound microbubbles can be used to improve bone fracture healing. Microbubbles are used routinely as contrast agents in ultrasound imaging in fields such as oncology and urology. However, they also can be induced to oscillate when stimulated remotely by ultrasound transducers. This promotes drug release and tissue penetration.

In this project, you will test whether ultrasound-activated microbubbles improve drug delivery and bone function in cell and tissue models. You will partner closely with clinical colleagues who are running a clinical trial to determine if microbubbles can be detected in bone fracture in patients. The project is part of a collaboration between the Departments of Human Development & Health and Engineering at the University of Southampton, University Hospital Southampton, and the University of Oxford. The project will involve significant collaboration with clinicians and engineering scientists in Southampton, and you will join an exciting multidisciplinary team working in the field of regenerative medicine

You should be a highly motivated candidate, capable of independent working and contributing intellectually to the direction of the project. Evidence of publishing quality peer-reviewed research papers would also be advantageous.

The successful applicant will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualification and experience in biomedical sciences, biomaterial science, bio- physics or biomedical engineering. Ideally you will have experience in one or more of the following skills: cell culture models, molecular biology, ultrasound techniques and instrumentation.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.
