Postdoctoral research on harmful algae blooms About the position
The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) has a 4-year fixed term postdoctoral position available within the Plankton research group. Place of work will be in Flødevigen outside Arendal, Norway.
About the research group
The Plankton research group is maintaining several environmental monitoring programs, and advise the Norwegian government on environmental issues in nutrient chemistry, phytoplankton and zooplankton ecology. Environmental monitoring and plankton research are conducted in coastal as well as in open ocean waters. In addition to advising the government on marine resource management at lower trophic levels, as well as environmental issues, the Plankton group is also conducting peer-review research and outreach to the common public. IMR and the Plankton group are key players in coastal monitoring of harmful algal blooms (HABs) and are working on an early warning system for Norwegian coastal waters and basic research on HAB.

The Plankton group is looking for a person with a doctorate (PhD) in marine biology or marine ecology.
The candidate needs knowledge of phytoplankton growth dynamics and ecology, preferably within HAB species.
The candidate must also have experience with statistical analysis of large sets of data, such as trend analysis of time-series.
The candidate will also have working knowledge of genetic tools for quantitative and qualitative detection of phytoplankton communities.
Personal background and skills:
Prior experience from experimental biology.
Experience with image analysis and species identifications.
The candidate will have experience from research cruises and field collections.
We are looking for a candidate with good communication and teamworking skills, while maintaining a focus and ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary field of research.
