Postdoctoral Scientist in Thermoplastic Fiber Preform Composites

100%, Zurich, temporary

The Laboratory of Composite Materials and Adaptive Structures Groupat ETH Zurich is searching for a postdoctoral researcher in developing novel composite preform materials, in the form of individually coated glass fibers, namely bicomponent fibers. The aim of the position is to advance the understanding of a novel coating processing involving the deposition of thermoplastic matrix material on individual glass fibers for advanced composite preform technologies. We invite candidates with research interests in one or several of the topics of materials science and engineering, chemistry, polymer science with a passion for composite materials and structures.

Project background

Thermoplastic composites offer a wide range of advantages compared to thermosets in terms of recyclability, joining, re-forming abilities and decreased cycle times due to the absence of time-consuming curing reactions. However, thermoplastics exhibit a high melt viscosity limiting fast and cost- efficient processing. Therefore, to make composites accessible to a greater market this disadvantage needs to be overcome. CMASLab is dedicated to expediting the adaptation of sustainable composite materials and processing technologies for applications requiring top material quality. To that end, we are currently developing a novel innovative processing route for high performance fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites which relies on the direct coating of glass fibres. Preforms made from these coated fibres provide numerous advantages for manufacturing at high volume, at large scale, with high fibre volume content, or with highest precision at small scales. Therefore, we are seeking to further develop a systematic understanding of the processing and property behavior, along with promoting an increased sustainability of the existing manufacturing methodologies. These investigations are intended to contribute to the rapid manufacturing and high- volume production of advanced composite preform materials that is competitive with existing market solutions.

Job description

Duties and responsibilities:

Develop scalable robust processing strategies for coating glass fibers with thermoplastics.

Determine methodologies that limit or eliminate hazardous manufacturing steps

Experience in composite part manufacturing

Expertise in polymer synthesis and processing

Practical experience in a wet chemistry lab

Understanding of permeability between matrix and fibers

Assist with the supervision of PhD and masters students linked to the project

Assist with the teaching of courses in the department of mechanical engineering

Write peer-reviewed publications and promote results at international conferences

He/she is also expected to help in designing teaching modules

Your profile

We are seeking an individual who is competent in surface science and engineering, sustainable materials with a demonstrated enthusiasm for composite materials and scale up methodologies. Candidates must have obtained a PhD degree in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer science or a related field. Successful candidates will have a proven track record of excellent research performance. Prospective candidates will be part of an international research team and expected to be highly motivated, passionate about science, and collaborative.

Direct experience with polymer processing and/or surface modification such as composite materials

Value expanding your network to an advanced technology readiness level

Expertise in materials testing techniques such as: DSC, TGA, SEM and DMA
