Infection Biology (W3) BesGr. W3 BBesO

at the earliest possible date.

At the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research (HZI), headquartered in Braunschweig, scientists are investigating the infection strategies of bacterial and viral pathogens and their interaction with the host. Accordingly, they are pursuing the overarching goal of developing new approaches for the prevention, therapy and diagnosis of infectious diseases. The Hannover Medical School (MHH) is one of the leading german university clinics in the field of infectious diseases with a special focus on both infection research and immunology. The close partnership between the two institutions is strengthened not least by TWINCORE, the Center for Experimental and Clinical Infection Research, and the recently established CIIM – Center for Individualized Infection Medicine, as well as numerous outstanding regional and interregional alliances and initiatives.

The successful applicant will be qualified in both research and teaching with emphasis on aspects of the pathogenesis and immunology of infections with bacterial and viral pathogens. Reflecting the HZI`s research focus, the applicant`s research expertise will be in the areas of gastrointestinal bacterial infections, antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections, chronic viral infections or respiratory viral infections. Alternatively, expertise in the fields of the immune response to infections, vaccine development, or the investigation of immune-based therapeutic approaches is desirable.

The aim of integrating basic biological research with clinical research findings in personalized medicine should be a central focus, thus strengthening translational and individualized infection research at the Braunschweig / Hannover site.

The position holder will be appointed as a civil servant at MHH (“Jülich Model”) and simultaneously as a department leader at the HZI in Braunschweig. Close cooperation with TWINCORE and CIIM, jointly established by HZI and MHH, is expected.

Prerequisites for the appointment are high-ranking publications in international journals, the successful acquisition of third-party funds, international reputation, experience in leading a research unit as well as in teaching, a degree in human medicine or science with an emphasis on infection biology or immunology and the “habilitation” (or an equivalent level of scientific achievement).

A special commitment to teaching, including interdisciplinary courses according to the new regulations for human medicine in the Hannibal model study course at MHH, is expected.
