3-year postdoc - Device Circuit Co-Design of Spintronic Memories Assisted by Photonics

With explosive growth in data, computing systems require novel storage technologies with dramatically increased speed and area-efficiency. The current technology, CMOS-based memories, brings several challenges including large standby power, area and process variations. To this end, developing novel non-volatile memories, as a potential for universal memory, with a speed of CMOS-based on-chip memories and extremely low power consumption is essential.

The EU FET-open project “SPICE” aims to realize the memory technology of the future, beyond 2025. It will combine breakthroughs in spintronic memory technology, so-called Spin-Transfer Torque Random-Access Memories (STT-RAMs), with the discovery of switching magnetic materials using short optical pulses. Our hypothesis is that the combination of photonics and spintronics on a single chip will lead to the most energy-efficient and fastest memory technology ever realized. There is funding for 3 years of employment. In case further external funding is procured within the academic area the candidate is estimated obviously qualified for, an extension can be possible for up to a total maximum of 4 years employment as a post doc.

Qualifications and specific competences

Gaining a thorough understanding of Spin-Transfer Torque Random Access Memory (STT-RAM) circuits and architectures

gaining a broad understanding of the targeted photonic-spintronic memory technology,

and use this knowledge to model, design and simulate an energy-efficient spintronic memory architecture enabled by photonics.

generate new ideas and novel designs to optimize the power efficiency of the designed, modeled and fabricated memory.

A PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or similar (or about to get one)

A solid background in Electronics, Integrated Circuit Design and Device Modeling.

The ability and willingness to explore the broader field of spintronics and photonics as a part of this work.

The ability to work and interact with experts from a broad range of scientific and technology backgrounds in an international consortium.

The ability to work independently and to generate new ideas and creative approaches.

Skills in working with IC CAD tools and Verilog-A

The employee will work with Integrated Circuits and Electronics Lab (ICELAB) in a close-collaboration with photonics Lab.

Place of Employment and Place of Work

The place of employment will be Aarhus University, and the place of work is Department of Engineering, Finlandsgade 22, DK-8200 Aarhus N, Denmark.
