Postdoctoral Scholar - Philomathia Program - BECI
The distinguished Philomathia Fellowship Program, hosted by the Berkeley Energy and Climate Institute (BECI), invites applications for postdoctoral research that has major impact on the global challenges in the nexus of energy and climate.
The BECI Philomathia Fellowship was established in 2013 by a generous endowment from the Philomathia Foundation. The program will bring to UC Berkeley graduates of leading PhD programs, drawn to campus to pursue cutting-edge energy and climate research.
The research of Berkeley Energy and Climate Institute makes a difference by transcending the confines of individual disciplines - (science engineering, policy, law, behavior, and business) - to create clean renewable energy for a sustainable planet. BECI's programs cover the whole of the Berkeley campus and they also collaborate with many projects at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).
The successful Fellow will demonstrate depth in their prior research accomplishments, as well as both depth and breadth in their proposed plan of work. We especially invite applicants from the following disciplines:
Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Materials, and Civil & Environmental Engineering Chemistry, Geology, and Geophysics related to energy and climate
Atmospheric, Ocean, and Climate Science, Architecture, Urban Design, and Behavior related to energy and climate
Qualifications:
Fellows are expected to identify and independently select their partners for research interaction and collaboration among all UC Berkeley faculty members and research teams. The Fellow will report to the BECI Director and also be expected to interact informally with other members of the BECI community beyond their core-collaborator/mentor. Applicants both from leading universities and from research institutions will be considered. UC Berkeley PhD graduates or individuals already in residence at UC Berkeley are not eligible for these awards.
Philomathia Postdoctoral Fellowships are full-time and are awarded for two years, subject to adequate progress during the first year. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition to salary and benefits, the award provides a one-time research allowance of $25,000.
Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant discipline related to energy and climate is required by the start date. Examples include, but are not limited to architecture, biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, social science, urban planning, etc. Candidates should have no more than three years of research experience since receipt of Ph.D. at start of appointment. At the time of application, the basic minimum qualification is the completion of all degree requirements except the dissertation.
Additional Required Qualifications (by start date):
- Applicants cannot hold a paid or unpaid position on the Berkeley campus at the time of application or throughout the competition and award cycle.
- Demonstrated record of writing and publishing manuscripts and/or reports.
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with other researchers.
- Experience and knowledge of energy and/or climate research.
- Capacity for innovation and demonstrated ability to think outside of current paradigms.
Preferred Qualifications:
Particular focus areas are encouraged. These include large-scale energy efficiency in all sectors; science and technology for renewable energy, biofuels and the advanced grid; sustainable resource management in all sectors; climate-science as it relates to adaptation research (sea-level rise, forest fires etc); high-impact energy policy.
