Postdoctoral Fellow (Parasite Population Genomics) : Cambridge, United Kingdom

Postdoctoral Fellow (Parasite Population Genomics)

PDF Salary range: £30655 to £38428 per annum plus excellent benefits.

Fixed-term for 3 years.

The Parasite genomics group uses large-scale sequencing approaches to study parasitic diseases of global importance, with a particular emphasis on the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Existing projects within the group build on genome sequence data to address scientific questions from population genomics through to functional genomics and immunology, and include working on a range of helminth and protozoan parasites.

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and ambitious postdoctoral fellow to contribute to projects involving the application of high-throughput sequencing technologies to understand the population structure, evolution and epidemiology of eukaryotic protozoal parasites. A key aspect of this role will include the analysis of 'next generation sequencing' data in a population genetic framework. Our approach is to first characterize the extent and pattern of genome variation in natural populations of key human pathogens. We can apply this new understanding to investigate basic questions about the genetics of these organisms, many of which have strikingly different biology to the usual eukaryotic model organisms, including complex life cycles involving more than one or two host(s). More importantly, we can also use these data for more applied purposes, for example to understand parasite epidemiology or to empower surveillance of parasite populations in the context of ongoing control programs.

Ongoing projects involve Leishmania species and we are developing collaborations on the enteric pathogen Cryptosporidium. The successful candidate will be encouraged to both get involved in existing projects and develop their own interests in related areas, taking advantage of the unparalleled resources and expertise available within the Institute.

Key responsibilities:
• to develop, drive and deliver cutting edge research on the population genomics of parasitic protozoa
• analysis and interpretation of high-throughput sequencing datasets, leading to the preparation of manuscripts for publication
• development and validation of novel analytical methods where required
• effective communication with collaborators and colleagues and through presentation at international meetings
• design of spin-off research projects and follow-up studies

Essential Skills
• a strong track record of academic achievement, including a PhD or equivalent in a relevant biological subject
• experience and strong technical skills in population genetics, genomics or bioinformatics and ideally in some combination of these disciplines
• a high level of computational skills and strong working knowledge of statistical analysis
• demonstrable experience and initiative in developing and leading projects
• strong written and verbal communication skills

Ideal Skills
• experience of working on parasitic protozoa
• strong track record in publishing scientific work in international peer-reviewed journals
• demonstrable experience in collaborating with epidemiologists, field researchers or ‘wet lab’ researchers
• experience of working with next-generation sequencing data
• experience of working in a Unix computing environment
• demonstrable good project management and organisational skills.

Other information

Postdoctoral Fellows are typically in their first or second postdoctoral position as part of a period of early career research training. The post is a three year fixed-term contract.

The Sanger Institute is a charitably funded research centre that applies the power of genomics to uncover the basis of genetic and infectious disease. We conduct science at a scale and speed that sets our research apart. Our passion is to provide results that can be translated into diagnostics, treatments or therapies that reduce global health burdens.

The Institute is located near Cambridge on the stunning Wellcome Trust Genome Campus. This growing and dynamic site is the British hub of genomic science. It hosts the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), the Centre for Therapeutic Target Validation, a Biodata Innovation Centre and will soon host Genomics England Limited’s 100,000 Genomes Sequencing Centre. It is an excellent environment in which to work and collaborate with researchers on campus and around the world and benefit from cross-fertilisation of ideas.

To help researchers to develop their skills and networks, the Institute hosts a range of scientific seminars with internal and invited speakers, scientific group meetings and skills development workshops. In addition the Campus is home to the Wellcome Trust Advanced Course and Scientific Conferences programme and the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre.

Our Benefits include: Defined Benefit Pension Scheme, Group Income Protection, Healthcare scheme, Childcare Vouchers, Nursery and 25 days Annual Leave plus Bank Holidays. We also have a gym, two cafes, a nursery, dining facilities, and a free campus Bus service. Our thriving Sports and Social Club provides many opportunities to meet with people working across the campus.
