Position Summary:
Berkeley Lab’s Biological Systems and Engineering Division has an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Researcher. This position will be part of the Host Engineering group led by Aindrila Mukhopadhyay and part of the Fuels Synthesis Division at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI). You will be involved in two sub-projects: (1) studying a range of microbial hosts to identify and optimize gene targets for solvent tolerance, and (2) optimize consolidation of production pathways with tolerance mechanisms to improve production. Your primary role will be to optimize deletion and expression strains in bacterial hosts and develop assays to examine production changes under a range of growth conditions.

What You Will Do:
• Conduct a suite of systems biology and bioprospecting experiments to identify candidates that enhance tolerance to biofuels and other Microbially generated solvent-like compounds.
• Conduct strain engineering, and develop methods to assay for increase in specific production of target compound.
• Develop assays to evaluate strain physiology during scale up and other industrially relevant growth conditions.
• Prepare manuscripts for publication and assist with the development of funding proposals and patents.
• Participate in group meetings and seminars.
• Maintain an accurate and detailed scientific logbook of all experiments performed. Ensure that others could duplicate results.

Additional Desired Responsibilities:
• Responsible for periodic reports to the director of the project, participation in group meetings, training research assistants and assisting others in the lab who require guidance with molecular biology and microbiology techniques.

What Is Required:
• Recent PH.D in Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related areas.
• Expert knowledge in handling model microbes such as E. coli and other bacteria including growth, culturing, transformation, gene manipulation, creation of expression systems and protein purification.
• Experience in functional genomics, synthetic biology, gene regulation and stress response in bacteria.
• Work with the guidance of a director or principal investigator and conduct experiments independently.
• Ability to conduct original work that meets the milestones of a larger project and scientific program.
• Maintain an electronic lab notebook, maintain appropriate records and manage data.
• Provide detailed six monthly reports that can be used as part of manuscript for peer reviewed journals.

Additional Desired Qualifications:
• Experience with scientific journal writing submissions and ability to write above average reviews and articles for submission.
• Experience with handling different types of omics data such as that from microarray analysis, RNA seq or metagenomic sequences.

This is a 1 year term appointment with the possibility of renewal for up to 5 years based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. Salary for postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
