Within the School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, our research has focused on elucidating the molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions particularly focusing on human restricted pathogens including Neisseria meningitidis, Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis. Particular focus in the identification of the roles of the pathogens surface proteins in association with host cells and tissues and evasion of the immune surveillance. Such proteins have potential for use as vaccine antigens.

At present, one particular focus is the molecular basis for the interaction of the meningococcal surface proteins Opc and Msf with vitronectin, via which bacteria adhere to human cells, but also avoid serum bactericidal activity. The current post is available for an outstanding postdoctoral research assistant to explore the potential of the functional regions of Msf and Opc to be used as vaccine antigens. The project will involve a combination of bacteriology, immunology, protein biochemistry and bioinformatics. The ideal candidate would have practical experience in each of these areas.
