Applications are welcome for a postdoctoral fellowship on scholarship in immunology with focus on infection biology.

The successful candidate will work in the research group of Rober Blomgran at the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences, Linköping University. The successful candidate will be responsible for and carry out sub-projects for latent TB in Sweden, where we focus on whole blood analysis of immune cell activation and oxygen radical response. The method for analysis of immune cells' intracellular oxygen radical production upon activation of whole blood is a new flow cytometry method set up by the research group and includes analysis of three monocyte subsets, neutrophils and eosinophils.

In Ethiopia, we have recently shown that worm infection leads to an expansion of intermediate (HLADRhighCD14++/CD16+) and non-classical (HLA-DRhighCD14low/CD16++) monocytes in TB patients and that these act inflammatory (increased TNF) and correlated this to the patients' degree of illness. Therefore, these monocyte subtypes will be studied more closely in latent TB and pregnancy and the cells will be characterized with respect to ROS response, inflammatory ability and its immunosuppressive ability. This project has relevance for infection and inflammation research on a broad front, and the applicant will pursue the research in close collaboration with pre-clinicians and clinicians. The research is translational and a large set of collected material from patients with a worm infection will be available for the postdoctoral researcher for further clinical verification of the findings.

Skills and qualifications

Applicants should have a broad base in immunology, particularly directed towards infection biology or inflammation research.

The candidate we are looking for is at the beginning of the career as independent researcher with a flexible and persistent approach to the project.

We expect you to be a good team player with a positive attitude and the ability to communicate well.

Courses in immunology, statistics, infection biology and host-pathogen interaction or similar are meritorious.

Requirements:

Independent writing of manuscripts

Excellent English level

Cell culture

Basic statistical analysis methods

Meritorious:

P2/P3 lab experience

Specific Requirements

For being eligible you need to be non-Swedish citizen with a PhD awarded at a university outside Sweden. Your doctoral degree should have been awarded in the last three years, exceptions can be made for fellows who have special circumstances such as parental leave, sickness or similar.

Benefits

This development postdoctoral fellow position is initially for a 2-year timeframe. During the initial two years the candidate will be given a tax-free scholarship of 25.000 SEK monthly (appx $2.400) and will be supported by 30 days annual leave entitlement.
