Post-Doctoral Researcher, Department of Archaeology, College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences

Kilmallock – Derry – Bradford: Twinning

North-South Irish Walled Towns and UK Cities of Culture is an interdisciplinary project that brings together cutting- edge digital technologies with a humanities approach to the creation of virtual models of the medieval walled towns of Kilmallock and Derry, in which buildings, streetscapes as well as the histories of buildings and their inhabitants are made accessible in the virtual space. This is a collaboration between University College Cork, the University of Bradford and a variety of stakeholders, such as the Local Authority Archaeologistmof Limerick City & County Council, the Irish Walled Towns Network, Friends of Derry Walls, The Heritage Council, The Office of Public Works, the National Monuments Service Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage, The Discovery Programme among others.

The position will entail research on the medieval to modern history of buildings and their inhabitants within the walled towns of Kilmallock and Derry. This will draw on existing research, published and unpublished, but importantly, will require the successful candidate to consult primary records in relevant archives, some of which are available online, others will have to be consulted in person in both the North and the South of Ireland in different locations. The project also has a strong community element and will require the researcher to undertake interviews with local stakeholders to gather information on house biographies. The successful candidate will have excellent familiarity with historic and archaeological research methods as well as awareness of the range of available primary sources. The candidate will have to be able to travel to the different locations for this primary research for extended periods of time, and a valid driving licence would be advantageous. Latin reading skills would be helpful, but are not required.

We are looking for a researcher with excellent research skills, ideally in the historic to modern period, familiar with the commonly used primary records, excellent team working and interpersonal skills, who brings enthusiasm to work in a multi partner and multisectoral project, in which they will liaise and collaborate with various academic, community and state body representatives across the island of Ireland and with the project lead in Bradford University, UK. Some project management work will form part of this post also, such as the organisation of workshops.
