Postdoc in Computational Neuroethology at the Department of Neuroscience

Copenhagen University

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic postdoc for a two-year position to commence on 15 May 2024 or after agreement in the Bellardita group at the Neuroscience Department, University of Copenhagen.

We are offering a postdoctoral research opportunity combining computer science and neuroscience to revolutionize preclinical research using artificial intelligence and machine vision. This project aims to evaluate behavioural changes in rodents caused by nervous system pathologies and assess therapeutic interventions for various neurological disorders.

Information on the department can be found at: https: // in.ku.dk/

Our research Bellardita Laboratory merges molecular and systems neuroscience approaches to investigate how the nervous system generates coordinated movements and the key changes at the cellular and network levels after paralysing spinal cord injury. Through a combination of basic and translational research with advanced behavioural profiling, mouse intersectional genetics, optogenetic, electrophysiology, and anatomical investigation the laboratory aims to bridge the gap between a fundamental understanding of neural circuitries controlling movements and the development of effective therapeutic interventions for motor recovery in people with spinal cord injury.

Your job We are excited to announce a postdoctoral research opportunity at the intersection of computer science and neuroscience. This unique initiative is dedicated to reshaping preclinical research by leveraging the power of artificial intelligence and machine vision. Specifically, the project focuses on assessing behavioural profiles in rodents, examining how they change due to pathological states of the nervous system, and evaluating the impact of therapeutic interventions designed to restore normal function. Our overarching goal is to expedite the development and assessment of innovative therapeutic solutions for neurological disorders with diverse origins. As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will assume a central role in propelling this transformative project. Your primary responsibilities will encompass:

Collaborating with a dynamic team of experimentalist neuroscientists, computer scientists, and clinicians to conceive and implement behavioural tests employing 2D and 3D cameras, machine vision, and machine learning techniques.

Formulating data processing pipelines for capturing and scrutinizing a rich dataset of behavioural patterns, with a distinct emphasis on comprehending how brain damage and therapeutic interventions influence behaviour.

Contributing to the establishment of a platform for the swift assessment of therapeutic interventions within expansive datasets, with a particular focus on scaling up the platform to meet industry requirements.

Engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration with Novo Nordisk, the nation's largest healthcare company in Denmark, to translate biological insights into innovative therapeutic solutions. We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience.

Profile

Essential experience and skills:

A Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related field, specialized in machine vision, machine learning, or artificial intelligence.

Proficiency in programming, with notable skills in pertinent languages and frameworks (e.g., Python, OpenCV, TensorFlow, etc.).

Profound competence in imaging and signal processing within the field of neuroscience is highly advantageous.

A strong proclivity for interdisciplinary research and a readiness to collaborate across diverse scientific domains.

Outstanding communication skills and a demonstrated track record of research publication in peer-reviewed journals, as well as presentation at conferences.

An enthusiastic commitment to applying state-of-the-art technology to address real-world challenges in neuroscience and healthcare.

Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams.

Excellent English skills written and spoken.

Having a FELASA or equivalent certification for animal experimentation is desirable but not crucial.

Place of employment The place of employment is at the Department of Neuroscience, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories and core facilities Core Facilities (https: // healthsciences.ku.dk/research/corefacilities/).
