Postdoctoral Research Assistant - Virology

The Carroll Group, at the Centre for Human Genetics, runs an internationally renowned laboratory focussing on high consequence emerging viral infections. Current projects involve Ebola, Lassa fever, Nipah and SARS-CoV-2. A Postdoctoral Research Assistant is sought to join their highly motivated team!

As the Postdoctoral Research Assistant, you will work within the team that are studying immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 following vaccination and/or infection. You will need experience of working in a laboratory environment with an accurate and systematic approach to the documentation of experimental work.

You will be responsible for managing your own academic research and administrative activities. This involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines. You will perform virological neutralisation experiments in containment level 3 and assess antibody binding parameters. In addition, you will process samples and optimise additional assays where required. You will be required to keep up to date with matters relating to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), Health and Safety, COSHH sheets and other relevant regulations. Performing laboratory tests in order to produce reliable and precise data to support scientific investigations will be also part of your responsibilities.

It is essential that you hold a PhD/DPhil (or close to completion) in a relevant subject such as Virology or Immunology. You will have experience of cell-based virology assays at Cat II and preferably Cat III, and experience with tissue culture of mammalian cells. In addition, you will have experience of working in a laboratory environment with an accurate and systematic approach to the documentation of experimental work. You will be able to manage your own research and administrative activities, within guidelines provided by senior colleagues. Experience in category III virology and working knowledge of coronaviruses is desirable for this role.
