Administrative Unit: University of Alaska Fairbanks

School/Business unit: UAF College of Fish & Ocean Science

Location: Kodiak, Juneau

Position Summary:

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) at the University of Alaska is looking for a postdoctoral fellow to lead a modeling project on crab-gear interactions. The project aims to assess the potential impacts of bottom-contact fishing gears on crab stocks in the Bering Sea by quantifying the spatial overlap of different fishing gears with snow crab and red king crab. The position is suited to researchers with an interest in fishery gear interactions, spatial population dynamics and expertise in spatial modeling. The project is funded through the Cooperative Institute for Climate, Ocean, and Ecosystem Studies (CICOES). As a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) sponsored Cooperative Institute, CICOES promotes and facilitates collaborative research among partner universities and the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC), the Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC), and/or the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL).The postdoc will join a collaborative team of shellfish biologists, quantitative ecologists, fisheries oceanographers, gear specialists and fisheries managers with partners at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center, Alaska Pacific University, the NOAA Alaska Regional Office Sustainable Fisheries Division and the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The position will be based at the AFSC Kodiak Laboratory or at the AFSC Auke Bay laboratories in Juneau, Alaska. Applicants who would like to work at the AFSC Sand Point Laboratory in Seattle or remotely may also be considered.

Duties:

100The successful candidate will have the opportunity to design and lead research, analyze large datasets, mentor students, prepare conference presentations and manuscripts, and coordinate a collaborative research effort. The project will leverage existing fishing effects modeling efforts to provide improved data for considering dynamic management measures for Bering Sea crab stocks. Specific duties include: 1) Quantifying overlap between fishing gear bottom contact and Bering Sea crabs at the spatial scale of stock boundaries and management areas; 2) Quantifying gear interactions during life history periods when crab may be especially vulnerable to disturbance; 3) Assessing crab-fishing gear overlap at localized scales in regions with high crab densities or heavy fishing activity; 4) Assessing overlap between crab stocks and fishing gear for which observed crab bycatch is infrequent (e.g., pelagic trawls); 5) Ranking the vulnerability of each stock and different life- history stages at localized scales to make qualitative recommendations for priority areas for conservation considerations. In addition, the successful candidate will communicate results to other researchers, stakeholders and decision makers.Essential

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: The ideal candidate will have experience with spatial and spatial-temporal models, geospatial mapping, advanced statistical training, and good programming skills (such as R or Python). We seek enthusiastic applicants that can provide evidence of creativity, productivity, and strong oral and written communication skills. The successful applicant will be an independent and motivated problem solver who enjoys working in a collaborative environment.

Preferred Experience & Education:

To be successful, the candidate should have a strong background in marine sciences and statistics or quantitative ecology. Relevant work experience is desirable and a promising publication record is highly valued.

Required Experience & Education:

Ph.D. degree (already received, or have completed all requirements and awaiting graduation) in fisheries, oceanography, marine biology or another relevant natural science subject. Must possess terminal degree prior to the start of position.

Demonsrated evidence of relevant and adequate statistical and modeling background; evidence of good R (or Python) programming skills.

Demonstrated ability to write effectively and publish (at least 2 peer- reviewed papers published or in review).

Salary Information:

This is a full-time, exempt, term-funded position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. The starting salary will be based on education and experience.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Please attach a resume, cover letter, and the names and contact information for three (3) professional references with your application.

The position will be based at the AFSC Kodiak Laboratory or at the AFSC Auke Bay laboratories in Juneau, Alaska. Applicants who would like to work at the AFSC Sand Point Laboratory in Seattle or remotely may also be considered.

The position will be open until filled with the initial review date to begin on September 18, 2023. To ensure consideration, please apply by 11:55 PM, Alaska Standard Time on September 17, 2023.
