We are looking for you!

You will work on the high power/high current power electronics for large-scale joule heating systems. You will investigate 1) thermal and behavior modelling of high-power semiconductor module (IGCT/ presspack IGBT etc). 2) new circuit topologies and design methods for high-power heating systems with improved reliability and energy efficiency.

JobDescription

Industrial heat makes up two-thirds of the industrial energy demand and almost one-fifth of the global energy consumption, while one-third of the total energy use of the Netherlands is related to thermal heating installations in the chemical industries. As the majority of industrial heat is generated by burning fossil fuel, it contributes to most of the direct industrial CO2 emitted each year. Therefore, it is essential to develop new technologies for direct electrification of these processes with green electricity and it is projected that before 2050 more than 80-130 TWh of the industrial energy demands need to be electrified.

This project is funded by EIRES of TU/e Eindhoven under the future chemistry program with a focus on system integration. In this project, we will provide holistic design and optimization of electrical and chemical parts of Joule heating system will be thoroughly investigated to achieve extremely high energy efficiencies for large-scale applications.

The objective of this position is to focus on advanced power electronics technology for high-temperature Joule heating using green electricity for industrially important chemical reactions. Specifically, the following research activities will be carried out to overcome the practical barriers in terms of reliability and cost:

Develop the thermal and behavior modelling of high-power semiconductor modules (IGCT/ presspack IGBT etc), and design the reliable driver and protection circuit under different operational conditions.

Investigate new circuit topologies and design methods for high-power heating systems with improved reliability and energy efficiency.

The expected outcomes are as follows:

Thermal and behavior modeling of high-power modules to ensure their reliable application in the converter level with enhanced driver and protection circuits.

Novel cost-effective topologies and design methods of power electronics converters with modularity, scalability and high efficiency will be developed, that meet specific dielectric and galvanic isolation criteria and achieve the dynamic control performance required from the chemical reactor.

Down-scaled experiment prototype of the high-power converters for design validation and integration with the Joule heating system.

Job requirements

PhD in power electronics or any other relevant program.

Ability to conduct high-quality academic research, demonstrated for instance by a relevant Ph.D. thesis and/or publication(s).

Hands-on experience in the design and implementation of high-power converters and as well as the modeling and testing of high-power semiconductor modules.

Have a forward-thinking mindset and is ambitious to develop a large program on power to heat technology together with industrial partners.

Excellent mastering of the English language, good communication and leadership skills. Note that there is no Dutch language requirement.

Be a team player and able to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary context.
