Organizational Overview

Brookhaven's Chemistry Division conducts research to understand and control chemical systems to develop clean energy solutions for national needs. The research aims to develop chemical principles that will underlie new energy conversion and storage technologies to improve energy security and reduce the environmental impacts of energy use. The division's research thrusts leverage leading facility capabilities at Brookhaven Lab such as National Synchrotron Light Source II, the Center for Functional Nanomaterials, and the division's own Accelerator Center for Energy Research.

The BNL catalysis science program in the Chemistry Division advances fundamental understanding of sustainable fuel and chemical synthesis pathways with a current emphasis on catalysis for C1 chemistry such as conversion of CO2. The program pursues an improved understanding of chemical catalysis for advanced fuel synthesis and energy conversion processes by elucidating catalytically important properties over well-defined surfaces, powders and nanostructures.

Position Description

The postdoctoral research associate will perform catalyst characterization and mechanistic studies for processes linked to C1 chemistry {CO2 hydrogenation, the water-gas shift reaction and methane dry reforming} on powder catalysts. The studies will be carried out using a combination of kinetic testing, infrared spectroscopy and synchrotron-based techniques such as ambient- pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, time-resolved x-ray diffraction and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. A large fraction of the project will be carried out in the Chemistry Division and at beamlines of the National Synchrotron Light Source II. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will help to develop instrumentation to characterize catalysts in operando conditions and to elucidate structure-function relationships.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Due to the nature of the experiments, the new research associate should have a PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering or physics with extensive experience in heterogeneous catalysis. Knowledge on in-situ and operando catalyst characterization is highly desirable.

Kinetic testing of Catalysts for C1 conversion.

X-ray (XRD, XPS, EXAFS) and vibrational (IR, Raman) characterization using in house capabilities and light source user facilities.

Prepare manuscripts, give presentations, and supervise students.

Safety and proposal preparation and planning.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

PhD degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics or related field

Knowledge and expertise in heterogenous catalysis

Knowledge and expertise in X-ray methods

Knowledge and expertise in Vibrational spectroscopies

Other information: BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past 5 years.
