Position/title – Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Agency/Location – Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi, TX

Responsibilities – A postdoctoral research fellow position is available under the supervision of Dr. Jian Sheng in conducting funded research projects on (i) Experimentally observing microbial behaviors and responses at oil water interfaces, especially near oil micro-droplets, and subsequently discover new biophysics and processes elucidating active colloids at the liquid-liquid interface. These physics include bacterial locomotion, various taxis behaviors, biophysical interactions, cell adhesion, and detachment, as well as processes leading to the formation of biofilm. These studies are performed in our newly developed microfluidic microcosm platform. (ii) Further developing microfluidic devices and techniques for studying cell, microbe, and tissues interacting with their surroundings to advance our fundamental understanding in cell-interface interactions under various environmental conditions. The successful candidate will be able to work in a state-of-the-art cleanroom located at Sheng lab that is equipped with microfabrication tools from photolithography, deposition (Sputter, evaporator, CVD, PECVD), dry etching (RIE, DRIE), as well as with material characterization tools including many optical microscopes, AFM and SEM, profiler. The successful candidate will work closely with collaborators within the group and outside at University of Texas Austin, The Johns Hopkins University, University of Pennsylvania, Texas A&M at Galveston, and Northwestern University. The candidate will be work on the development of microfluidics and MEMS devices and environmental microbial biofilms. Projects will require some knowledge in colloidial and surface science, biological flow and transport, exposure to microfluidics technology. The candidate will receive training in microfabrication, biomaterials, and microbiology

Qualifications –

(1) Ph.D. degree in Chemical engineering, Mechanical engineering, Biomedical engineering, Civil & environmental engineering, marine science with engineering exposure, or relevant fields.

(2) Research experiences in one of the following areas colloids, fluid mechanics, micro-scale flow, transport, and engineering is crucial for this position. Knowledge on cell physiology or microbiology is a plus.

(3) Good writing skill and hardworking aptitude towards experimental work are important.
