Job Description

Postdoctoral Position Studying Lipid Metabolism in Stem Cells
NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE, FREDERICK, MD

The laboratory has a long-standing interest in understanding the unique property and regulation of stem cells in the hope of translating such knowledge to treat human diseases, particularly cancer. We recently found that stem cells are metabolic unique. In our paper published on Nature, we found that stem cells, like hibernating animals, rely primarily on lipid reserves for energy, so that blocking COPI/Arf1-regulated lipolysis starves them to death. Building on the seminal discovery, we generated Arf1 CKO mice and are investigating how lipid metabolism regulates survival of stem cells and cancer stem cells in Drosophila/mouse models as well as identifying new drugs to eradicate the treatment-resistant cancer stem cells through targeting the lipid metabolism pathways. Please view the lab’s website at: https://ccr.cancer.gov/Basic-Research-Laboratory/steven-x-hou for general project information.

Candidates with a strong background in molecular and cell biology are encouraged to apply. The minimum annual starting stipend at NCI is ~$54,000 for a new graduate. The initial appointment is for two years, with an option of renewing for an additional three years.
