Your core project will be to conduct research on developing new generation aerospace aluminium alloys and understanding the fabrication/microstructure/property relationships by employing state-of-the-art characterisation and testing facilities at Manchester including Titan ChemiSTEM, Henry Moseley X-Ray Imaging Facility, and the Daresbury SuperSTEM. The role will require travel within the UK and internationally to interact with collaborators, participate in experiments and present at conferences.

You will be working with Dr Timothy Burnett in a dynamic team of academics, post-docs and PhD students. The research project is part of the prestigious Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials (BIAM) – University of Manchester (UoM) Technology Centre for aeronautical materials research and innovation. The BIAM-Manchester UTC will be an international leader in the fields of processing, testing, characterizing, microstructure and property modelling of advanced aeronautical materials, aiming at providing fundamental study for the development and fabrication of advanced aeronautical materials

You will need to show a high level of initiative, creativity and an ability to work both collaboratively and independently. You should have a PhD in Materials Science, Physics or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline, sound knowledge of physical metallurgy, experience of high resolution electron microscopy, excellent communication, team-work and organisational skills, a strong command of English and an excellent publication record. The ability to act as lead author in scientific papers and reports and to present work at international conferences is essential.
