The Laboratory for Biomedical Microtechnology (BMT) as part of the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) at the University of Freiburg (Germany) offers a temporary position as an Academic Advisor in neural engineering starting on 1st November 2016.

BMT is one of the internationally leading groups on the design and development of flexible neural interfaces and implants in the central and peripheral nervous system. Research results are transferred in interdisciplinary projects into preclinical and clinical studies with neuroscientists and clinicians. The BMT has access to the microsystems engineering cleanroom of the IMTEK and owns fully equipped laboratories for electrode and implant manufacturing and characterization.

Applicants must hold a PhD degree from a program of natural or engineering sciences and should have experience in neurophysiology, neural engineering, microsystems engineering or relating relevant fields. We expect from the candidate new impulses for the development and application of micromachined neural implants and the capability to set-up and manage an own research focus in the context of the laboratory. Experiences with optogenetics, polymer electronics or material-tissue interaction are highly appreciated. Besides the research work, candidates are involved into teaching (4h-LVS) and quality management processes of implantable medical devices. They shall accompany device development up to first clinical trials. Excellent English language skills are mandatory. Candidates should have either additional German language skills or should be willing to acquire them within the first year. It is possible to work on habilitation during employment.
