The Laboratory for Soft Materials and Interfaces of Prof. Lucio Isa in the Department of Materials at ETH Zurich is looking for a talented postdoctoral researcher to work on an exciting project focusing on the directed assembly of biological microscale objects for the controlled fabrication of biomaterials. The project will also be carried out in collaboration with the group of Dr. Eleonora Secchi at ETH Zurich.

Job description

The project will focus on:

capillary deposition of bacteria and bacterial spores into two-dimensional arrays

investigation of the structural evolution of two-dimensional films from pre-assembled bacteria and spores engineering of the spatial arrangement and growth conditions for materials development

The work will also include micro and nanofabrication, quantitative image analysis, structural and mechanical characterization using a wide range of complementary methods.

Your profile

You should:

Hold a PhD in (bio-)materials science, bio-physics or bio-engineering

Have prior extensive experience in bacteria culture and in the characterization of their physical behavior, and, ideally, have experience in genetically engineering bacteria

Have prior extensive experience in quantitative image analysis and structural characterization of soft materials

Ideally, have prior experience in working with bacterial spores

Furthermore, you should be prepared and excited to take on an exploratory project, with many opportunities for multiple future research directions. You will also be expected to contribute to the supervision of two PhD students working on related topics and become responsible for the bio-related research in the group.
