Brief introduction of the research group (group leader introduction):

Matteo Convertino’s research group at Shenzhen International Graduate School, Institute of Environment and Ecology, of Tsinghua University is recruiting 2 postdoctoral fellows. Dr. Convertino’s group main efforts are dedicated into computation and data-driven ecological forecast and engineering to design nature-based solutions countering hydroclimatic risk and enhancing ecosystem function in relation to socio-ecological systems objectives such as carbon neutrality, resource use, and ecosystem livability through sustainability objectives (project ’Economics of Engineered Ecology: ENHANCE). This also involves the robust definition of monitoring indicators, ecohydrological restoration strategy, risk hotspots, teleconnections, ecological finance schemes and communication to assess and control ecosystems. Research interests includes environmental data science, ecosystem dynamics and networks, socio-ecohydrology, computational sustainability, biocomplexity and ecophilia, ecosystem management and planning, ecological policy, data visualization and communication.

In an ecosystem basin framework, from the worldwide to the local scale, and within the project “Economics of Engineered Ecology (ENHANCE)” the two postdocs will have the primary objectives of:

1. Creating Past and Current Ecological Inventories of Keystone Biodiversity and Habitat Organization (to make available through developed dashboards), including foresight of future changes in conjunction with major databases;

2. Quantifying Systemic risk assessment and Carbon sequestration trajectories based on future Hydroclimatic Extremes and Development Scenarios; this will include robust characterization of ecosystem carbon/green metabolism on blue-grey metabolism (hydrology- and emission-related) and its alterations via allometric relationships on anthropogenic impact;

3. Designing accurate plans, Valuation and Ecological Engineering of Nature-based Solutions by leveraging future Risk through a Portfolio Decision Model for Optimization of Risk-adjusted Ecosystem Function;

4. Testing potential bio-inspired restoration technology (computationally and on the field); and

5. Writing 2 papers/year at minimum in Q1 journals, contributing to policy reports and plans for stakeholders, and creating engaging visualization of results to include in dashboards and presentations. This production effort is expected to be highly proactive, creative and in a strong collaboration with the team members and the PI.

The above objective will be sought for integrated:

(i) Coastal and Marine ecosystems (‘’Blue Carbon’’ habitats) with focus on Sea-level Rise and Land Reclamation as well as species exploitation, stakeholder resource-use and nature-based solutions; and

(ii) Terrestrial ecosystems (‘’Green and Teal Carbon’’ habitats) including Cities with focused on Hydroclimatic Extremes such as Droughts and Floods, keystone eco-indicators, systemic environmental pressure and nature-based solutions.

The PI highly support engagement in creative idea generation and work beyond the stated research; thus, any postdoc is welcome to develop new research ideas, methods and areas derived from integration of the above research lines with previous work and opportunities. Lastly, the research group supports postdoctoral fellows to apply for national, provincial and municipal scientific research projects with the person in charge.

研究组高度支持博士后参与创造性的想法和工作,因此,欢迎任何博士后通过之前的工作经历和机会,综合上述研究方向,提出新的研究想法、方法和领域。最后,课题组支持博士后在负责人的带领下申请国家、省、市级科研项目。

任职要求

1. Strong background in computational and data/analytic sciences applied to ecology, ecohydrology, hydroclimatology, network and information science, risk and decision science and integrated ecology-environmental sciences for spatio-temporally explicit ecological and climate forecasting, hazard forecasting, pattern analysis, ecosystem planning and engineering (restoration and creation), decision support systems for natural and urban systems (basins, coastal and marine systems, cities), and quantitative ecosystem planning and policy;

2. Vast experience with programming (Python and ArcGIS, or R, dashboard platforms and API), computational and theoretical modeling (pattern-based machine learning/AI is largely preferred or integrated ML and process-based), probabilistic numerical simulations, and big-data processing of global ecohydrological, biodiversity, climate and carbon database, as well as remote sensing imagery;

3. Mature experience in writing scientific papers and technical reports;

4. Large experience in data plotting and visualization, and high-quality graphical illustration and composition (Adobe Illustrator, CAD, Rhino and similar);

5. Excellent proficiency in verbal and written English and good skills in Chinese;

6. Very active, passionate, precise, efficient, very good at cooperation and communication, and with a clear and unique research vision based on precious research and independent thinking.

7. Field work experience, particularly with UAV and eDNA sampling, and ecological economics knowledge is desirable but optional.

7.有野外工作经验,特别是有无人机和eDNA采样的经验,有生态经济学知识是最好的,但可以选择。
